Colocation power and cooling should be evaluated against your equipment and continuity requirements. A facility’s resilience features matter, but they do not guarantee that every application stays available through every incident.
Prepare the equipment and power brief
List server models, rack units, network equipment, power supplies and measured load where available. Include expected growth and any unusually dense equipment. Ask how the facility assesses normal and peak demand rather than relying only on power-supply nameplate ratings.
Confirm how redundant power reaches your equipment
- Which power feeds and circuits are included in the quotation?
- What usable load and billing method apply?
- How should dual-power-supply equipment be connected?
- What arrangement is available for single-power-supply devices?
- What happens during planned maintenance or a component failure?
- Who can authorise and carry out changes to the power connections?
Redundancy must be understood end to end. Two cables do not, by themselves, demonstrate two independent paths. Request the design and operating explanation relevant to your rack allocation.
Check cooling suitability and monitoring
Discuss airflow direction, rack layout, blanking and the intended equipment density. Confirm environmental monitoring, alert ownership and the process for investigating hot spots. Do not assume an available rack automatically supports every high-density compute or storage configuration.
Read facility evidence precisely
The Uptime Institute Tier framework addresses site infrastructure characteristics, including concurrent maintainability for Tier III. Verify the exact assessment and facility involved. Keep that evidence separate from your hosting SLA and do not treat different certification schemes as interchangeable.
Plan for problems above the facility layer
Your server, storage, network configuration and application can still fail independently of building power or cooling. Maintain an application recovery plan and separately recoverable backups. Agree remote-hands scope, access arrangements and spare-part responsibilities so an incident does not begin with uncertainty about who can touch the equipment.
Before moving, test shutdown and restart procedures in an approved window and record dependencies. For important systems, define what the business does while recovery is underway rather than relying solely on an infrastructure availability target.
